Is The Beauty Industry Doing Enough To Tackle Plastic Pollution?

5 Squirrels take the environment seriously!

Here’s what we’re doing about it.

Last year the beauty industry contributed 142 billion units of packaging, and there’s no doubt that most of this ended up in landfill or in the ocean. That’s equivalent to every man, woman and child in Canada contributing 3,945 pieces of plastic waste a year! Or the same as you throwing away a piece a minute until you were 270,167 years old! It is an astoundingly large figure and one we need to take responsibility for. Here’s what we’re doing about it at 5 Squirrels!

Firstly, we are excited to announce our partnership with the University of Sussex to design a packaging solution that is biodegradable, sustainable, has an increased product life-cycle and less environmental impact, without compromising the clinical, luxury design style in our current packaging. This project is underway at the moment and we anticipate a final solution to be released in Summer 2020. This will be a significant move forward in transforming 5 Squirrels into a more sustainable business, and therefore your skincare brands too!

As our packaging project simmers away in the background we are making environmentally friendly changes to our product packaging system. 5 Squirrels have recently invested in an in-house void fill packaging machine, you may have noticed the green air pocket bags in your orders; we transitioned from classic bubble wrap, to these environmentally friendly air pockets, made from LDPE and reclaimed plastic. These new void fill bags have prevented contribution to landfill, due to being made from LDPE (low density polyethene), a very clean and safe plastic, combined with reclaimed LDPE, sourced from recycled products such as water bottles, plastic bags and tubing. LDPE is resistant to impact, moisture and chemicals, making it perfect for protecting your products whilst in transit!

However we understand that sometimes your products require some extra protection on the road, to resolve this and move towards becoming a fully sustainable company we have switched to a 100% recycled, 100% recyclable, biodegradable alternative. Our thick textured paper wrap has deep indentations to absorb impact and protect against external factors, mimicking the function of bubble wrap, whilst avoiding contributing to landfill.

We have reformulated all of Your Signature Range over the years, and the entire Your Signature Range is now 100% Vegan and cruelty free. We have partnered with PETA, if you would like the PETA logo incorporated onto your brand please let us know.

5 Squirrels are working in partnership with The Orangutan Foundation, and the help of our customers to preserve our precious rainforest. Every bottle of Lift, our palm free neck and décolletage firming cream sold preserves 1 acre of tropical rainforest for 1 year. We have currently preserved 1,100 acres of orangutan habitat! We’re on a mission to save 1,750 acres in total, that’s the same size as the Orkney Isles!

5 Squirrels also work tirelessly with their supply chain to ensure no human slavery or exploitation within their supply chain and all ingredients and packaging is ethical. We are a Living Wage company who are against modern slavery. We may not always be the cheapest, but we are proud that this is for good reason and all suppliers and staff are paid a decent wage for a dent days work, with no compromise on quality and minimum environmental impact.

We’re delighted to be moving towards becoming a fully sustainable company! To keep up to date with our enhancements follow us on our social media channels:
