The SCCS (Scientific Committee for Cosmetic Safety) in the EU has passed a new law on the safety of Retinol used in cosmetic products. This has now been passed into law in the UK.
The maximum concentrations allowed of vitamin A in cosmetics will be 0.05% Retinol Equivalent (RE) in body lotion, and 0.3% for other leave-on and rinse-off products.
The committee have concerns about consumer exposure to Vitamin A through dietary consumption and cosmetics, which could lead to a high intake and potential teratogenicity.
All products containing more than the above dose must be removed from the UK and EU marketplace over a phased period of 36 months and cannot be on retail shelves from 31st December 2026, 5 Squirrels will be reformulating Recover and R+ to the new required doses will launch before these dates.
We wouldn’t be able to put a recycle logo on the labels because your clients might think they can put the packaging straight in the recycling bin.
While the products are packaged in glass and plastic, which are widely recyclable materials, there are a few steps that need to be taken to ensure that the packaging is properly recycled:
Remove the labels, actuator, and lid.
Wash the packaging with soap and water to remove any product residue.
Check with the local council to see what types of materials they accept for recycling.
You can find your nearest recycling centre here: https://www.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator
We are committed to sustainability and are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.
The packaging for Lift and Illuminate is fully recyclable once the label has been removed, as are all the travel packs and back bars.
The Quench and C20 bottles are glass which is recyclable, but the pipette and label would need to be discarded first. They would still need to wash the packaging and check with the council.
Please get in touch if you need more information.
All our products are classified under the ‘cosmetic regulations’ as opposed to prescription only medication.
Under the cosmetic regulations the Responsible Person ie 5 Squirrels are required to be covered for Product Liability Insurance as they are consumer products. We have copies available should you wish to view this.
ZO, Obagi etc have POM which needs to be covered under your indemnity insurance as you are making a prescribing decision based on your medical diagnosis, cosmetics are a different regulatory pathway and therefore you cannot be held liable.
